We love Autumn here at Carvansons. And nothing says Autumn like a woody Cedarwood fragrance.

Cold nights curled up in front of a fire in a cosy jumper, frosty but bright days and the splendour of the changing tree colours. Autumn can be spectacular. So, we decided in today’s blog, we’d take a look at the woody aroma of Cedarwood.

What is Cedarwood?

Cedarwood oil is derived from the heartwood of cedar trees. No surprises there. However, it may surprise you to know that there are many varieties of cedar trees found around the world. Here at Carvansons, we use three types of Cedarwood; Virginia, Atlas and North African, all vary significantly in scent and in price. Cedarwood creates notes used to give a depth of fragrance and a ‘grounding’ quality.

Cedarwood oil has a woody scent with an undertone of citrus. Cedarwood has balsamic undertones and a camphorous odour. Pencil shavings and fine cigar boxes, which are often manufactured from cedar, are just some of the associated scent descriptors used when talking about this aromatic wood scent. The warm, woody scent of Cedarwood oil, or Cedar oil, can offer numerous benefits to the user in aromatherapy. Not only does it produces a grounding aroma that promotes feelings of vitality and wellness, but it also has many applications for everyday life.

Some of our favourite Cedarwood fragrances*

Wood & Wood Issey Miyake

This fragrance specifically focuses on the desire for the outdoors and being at one with nature. Loaded with cedar and sandalwood, the fragrance is balanced out by the fresh tang of a grapefruit top note.

Cardamom & Cedarwood Body Wash by Molton Brown

We are back with one of our favourite personal care companies again for the next fragrance. Molton Brown have managed to capture the woodiness of the cedar but pair it with fragrant bergamot and black peppercorn to create a zesty and spicy shower gel.

Le Cèdre by Miller Harris

Aromatic cedarwood takes centre stage in this quietly exquisite woody fragrance. The inclusion of black pepper adds spice and warmth, incense imparts a subtle wisp of woodsmoke whilst musk and cashmere wood blend and harmonise Le Cèdre into a supremely elegant fragrance.

Reasons to consider a Cedarwood fragrance

Combined with citrus fragrances, Cedarwood is great for home fragrancing and candles. Herbaceous notes and heart notes of bay, cedar and patchouli can also work well for this fragrance. Surprisingly, one of the most unlikely but winning combinations is when it is blended with floral fragrances like jasmine, creating a light yet earthy scent.
