The difference between Fragrance Oils, Essential Oils and Aromatic Compounds can often cause confusion for product manufacturers. Knowing what is best for your product can also be a challenge. It is just one of the many questions we encounter from new customers when they first embark on their fragrance selection journey.

And it is a really good question, as it is strewn with misconceptions. So, in today’s blog, we thought we’d give you a brief overview of the things to consider when selecting your ingredients.

What’s the difference between essential oils and fragrance oils?

When you initially start fragrancing a product, there can be a wide range of things to consider. Firstly, it is vital to understand what application or product the fragrance will eventually end up in.

What are Fragrance Oils?

Fragrance oils are a blend of speciality aromatic chemicals which are developed for their unique odour. They are also known as Aromatic Compounds. These chemicals provide a spectrum of aroma profiles, blended together to give your product its own unique identity.

If you are making a natural product, a natural fragrance can be created for you.  This is a blend of essential oils.

What are Essential Oils?

Essential oils contain naturally occurring chemicals, created through distillation or cold pressing. They yield a range of heath, wellbeing and therapeutic properties. As a result, they are regularly used in aromatherapy, meditation, reed diffusers, massage oils and therapeutic baths. . There are things to consider when looking to use essential oils in a final product. These factors differ from project to project and can have a huge effect on what is achievable in relation to your project.

What do you need to consider when using essential oils and/or fragrance oils?

As with all chemicals, there are always risks to using either essential oils and fragrance oils.

Essential oils have powerful aromatic properties and are suitable for room fragrancing and aromatherapy. But, they aren’t always suitable for every product. The potency and potential risks of essential oils require that you use them with care. All of the blends within our fragrance library conform to IFRA guidelines to ensure they are safe for use.

Often the creation of these fragrance oils is for a specific purpose and developed with your product, brand or restrictions in mind.
